Sunday October 6th marks National Badger day - a time when all badger lovers celebrate this much loved and iconic native mammal.
During Brocktober Oxfordshire Badger Group (OBG) reflects on the work of all the wonderful volunteers involved in our welfare and conservation work - and the badgers that make it all worthwhile.
We thank everyone who supports our work whether by donations or direct action. Badgers need all the support they can get to survive in this changing world.
Our vaccination project is entirely funded by public donations, with no government funding. 2024 is our sixth year of operation.
We have a network of trained and well equipped volunteers on standby to assist injured or trapped badgers.
Our sett and sighting records go back over 50 years. The information is invaluable and underpins all our activities. We organise regular 'sett survey' walks.
Our education and outreach activities usually involve school visits. There are always lots of questions from children and teachers alike. We also give more formal presentations on request and
have a stall at fairs and fetes.
We advise people who contact us for advice. They may have concerns about badgers in or around their properties, or the impact of a planning application or possible wildlife crime.
Social media attracts new members, spreads our message and engages the public. We are present across Facebook, Instagram and X. We run a mailing list and website.
Development puts pressure on badger setts and their foraging areas. We respond to planning applications and seek to that ensure mitigation measures give the best possible outcome. The photo shows a large main sett after closure under licence.
Two years ago we purchased a small parcel of woodland and are managing it as a nature reserve and haven for wildlife.
Our campaign to stop the badger cull is focused on the need for evidence based decision making. Killing over half of England's badger has not resulted in any measurable disease control benefit in cattle.
Our Group liaises with the police, Badger Trust, RSPCA and members of the public to help identify and report wildlife crime. We aim to ensure that all volunteers and members are suitably trained.

This October, we all want to help keep nature a happy place for us and badgers and honour their crucial role in our ecosystems!
